Life With A Labrador!
Labradors are good natured.
They require minimal grooming.
They are even-tempered, dependable with children, loyal, devoted, affectionate, & highly trainable. These are some of the reasons Labs are the favored breed as guides for the blind and helpers for the deaf and paralyzed.
Labs require very little maintenance in comparison to other breeds.
They should be exercised regularly to maintain muscle tone and fitness. Contrary to belief, they do not require a lot of open space to run around and can live quite comfortably in an apartment with frequent leash walks, to play ball or go swimming.
Labradors thrive in cool to cold weather.
During the summer special attention must be given to ensure that they do not become over-heated. A large plastic swimming pool with fresh water is wonderfully appreciated by your lab.
Labs shed, however...
A good food can significantly reduce shedding!
Labs are people dogs!
They love spending time with you. A Labrador also loves to run, retrieve, and play in water.
Labs stay puppies for a while.
You may think, "Great!" I love puppies. Well, only their minds stay puppies. Their bodies get big! They can clear off the coffee table with one wag of their tail. Labs need proper training and thankfully they are pretty easy to train. Persistence is a key! Labs mature mentally by the time they are 2-3 years old.
Labs can be easy to find.
This means you should be able to find one easily. Not everyone is doing a proper breeding job and paying attention to temperament and health. The reputable breeder's puppies are not cheap. Some people feel they can get off cheaper by paying less somewhere else. Remember you get what you pay for. You may purchase a puppy at a lower price, and run into many problems with the pup as he grows.
A Lab, as well as every dog, should always be supervised with small children.
A small puppy will naturally bite and chew on clothing, shoes, hands, etc.... Sharp puppy teeth can hurt without the puppy knowing it. A growing puppy can knock down a toddler in play. All dogs need to be supervised dog around small children.
